A surgical breast biopsy is an invasive procedure that is performed in the operating room under anesthesia. The area of concern is usually removed entirely. It is recommended when a minimally invasive needle biopsy is not technically possible or if specifically requested by a patient. This is a well tolerated outpatient procedure and is just as accurate as an image guided needle biopsy.
